The Perfect 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary

June 17, 2026 · 2 views

A well-structured Rwanda safari itinerary makes the difference between a hectic trip that rushes between parks and a genuinely transformative journey through one of Africa's most remarkable destinations. Seven days is a sweet spot: long enough to cover Rwanda's two main non-gorilla parks properly, with time in Kigali on either end, but compact enough to suit travellers who cannot stretch to ten days or two weeks.

This itinerary focuses on Kigali, Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park -- the core of any Rwanda safari beyond gorilla trekking. It is designed to flow naturally from east to west (or west to east), with each day purposeful without feeling rushed.

Rwanda Safari Itinerary: Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive Kigali

Most international flights arrive at Kigali International Airport in the morning or early afternoon. After clearing customs and immigration (e-visa or visa on arrival for most nationalities), your driver-guide will meet you for the transfer to your Kigali hotel.

Use the afternoon to settle in and orientate yourself in the capital. If energy permits, a late afternoon visit to Inema Arts Centre in Kiyovu is an excellent gentle introduction to Kigali's creative scene. Dinner at a restaurant in the Kimihurura or Kiyovu neighbourhood.

Stay: Kigali (Serena Hotel or Hotel des Mille Collines for comfort; mid-range options in Kiyovu or Kimihurura)

Day 2: Kigali -- Akagera National Park

After breakfast, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi. Allow a full two to three hours here; this is not a place to rush. The memorial is open from 08:00.

After lunch in Kigali, depart eastward toward Akagera. The drive from Kigali to Akagera's main gate at Kabarondo takes approximately 90 minutes on a good road. Arriving in mid to late afternoon allows time for a brief evening game drive inside the park to shake off the road and find your feet.

Stay: Inside Akagera (Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Akagera Game Lodge, or Magashi Camp if budget allows)

Day 3: Full Day in Akagera National Park

A full day of game drives is the centrepiece of any Akagera stay. Start before sunrise for the dawn game drive -- this is when lions are most active and the light is at its most dramatic. A ranger-guide accompanies you and brings knowledge of current predator movements, rhino tracking patterns and birding hotspots.

After a late morning break at camp, the afternoon offers options: a boat safari on Lake Ihema (pre-booked; typically 2 hours) is one of the park's signature experiences, or continue the game drive in a different section of the park. The hippo-dense shorelines of the lake system, the woodland areas in the north where elephants are commonly found, and the southern grasslands where lions favour the open terrain are all worth exploring.

Stay: Inside Akagera

Day 4: Akagera to Kigali to Nyungwe Forest

An early morning drive on Day 4 maximises final Akagera viewing time before departure. Leave the park by 10:00 for the drive back to Kigali (90 minutes), stopping for a late breakfast or early lunch in the city if needed.

From Kigali, head southwest toward Nyungwe. The road passes through spectacular highland scenery -- crater lakes, tea plantations and the terraced hillsides that define Rwanda's interior. The drive to Nyungwe takes approximately three to four hours from Kigali. Arrive in the afternoon for a briefing from your lodge on the following day's activities.

Stay: Nyungwe area (One&Only Nyungwe House for luxury; Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel for mid-range)

Day 5: Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest

Day 5 is the emotional and physical heart of the Nyungwe experience. After an early breakfast, transfer to the Uwinka or Cyamudongo ranger station for a 07:30 briefing before chimpanzee tracking begins.

Tracking typically takes two to five hours depending on where the chimps have moved. The hour spent in the presence of a habituated chimpanzee community is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in East Africa. Return to the lodge for a late lunch and an afternoon of rest -- the tracking can be physically demanding.

If energy levels allow, the late afternoon is a pleasant time for a gentle walk around the lodge grounds or the short Igishigishigi trail section near the park entrance.

Stay: Nyungwe area

Day 6: Canopy Walk and Forest Exploration

Rise for an early breakfast and head to the Uwinka visitor centre for the canopy walkway experience. An early start -- arriving at the walkway before 08:00 -- gives you the best chance of morning mist rising through the canopy and a quieter experience before day-trip visitors arrive from Kigali.

After the canopy walk, continue along the Uwinka circuit trail (around 3 kilometres) for additional forest immersion. Colobus monkeys are commonly seen along this route. Return to the lodge for lunch.

The afternoon is flexible: dedicated birders can spend several hours on the Bigugu trail or the Igishigishigi trail with a specialist birding guide. Others may prefer to visit a local tea estate or simply read on the lodge veranda with the forest canopy below them.

Stay: Nyungwe area

Day 7: Nyungwe to Kigali -- Depart

Depending on your flight time, Day 7 offers either a leisurely morning departure or an opportunity for one final short walk before the drive back to Kigali (three to four hours). The road north from Nyungwe passes through some of Rwanda's most scenic highland territory; it is worth planning a stop at one of the viewpoints overlooking the Kivu region.

Arrive at Kigali International Airport in good time for your international departure.

How to Extend the Itinerary

  • Add Lake Kivu (2-3 nights): Slot in between Nyungwe and Kigali, or replace the final Kigali day with a night at Rubavu or Karongi on Lake Kivu
  • Add Volcanoes National Park (2 nights): Extend to 10-12 days and add gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking in the Virungas
  • Add Uganda (4-6 nights): Cross the border for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest or game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Add Tanzania (5+ nights): An extension to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater from Kigali (connecting flight via Nairobi or Kilimanjaro) makes a complete East African safari

Practical Notes for This Itinerary

  • Book chimpanzee tracking permits as far in advance as possible -- availability is limited and they sell out
  • A 4x4 vehicle with driver-guide is required for all park sections; this is typically arranged through your operator
  • All park entry fees and activity permits are payable at the relevant gates or in advance; amounts are government-set and subject to change
  • Pack warm layers for Nyungwe (temperatures at altitude can drop significantly at night)
  • This itinerary moves at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed; the mid-day breaks allow time to absorb each experience

A 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary built around Kigali, Akagera and Nyungwe is genuinely among the most varied and rewarding wildlife journeys available anywhere in East Africa. The contrast between the open savannah drives and the deep forest trekking is dramatic, and the ease of travel within Rwanda's compact geography makes it entirely practical in a week.
