January and February

June, July and August
June to August represents the peak dry season and is broadly the best time to visit Rwanda for most travellers. Rainfall is minimal across the country, temperatures at altitude are cool and crisp (Nyungwe can drop to 10 degrees C at night), and savannah vegetation in Akagera is dry and low, making wildlife conspicuous.
Game drives in Akagera are at their most productive: predators are active, animals concentrate around water sources, and the clear air makes photography easier. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is at its most comfortable in terms of forest floor conditions, though the chimps themselves are less predictable in the dry season as they range more widely.

September
September is an excellent month and arguably slightly underrated. The dry conditions continue, many lodges have slightly lower occupancy than July and August, and the light -- particularly in the late afternoons -- has a softness that photographers prize. October and November
The short rainy season brings welcome green to the landscape and tends to bring migratory bird arrivals, which excites birders considerably. Rain is typically intermittent rather than all-day, and mornings are often clear. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is manageable, forest trails are wetter but passable with proper gear. Some lodges offer shoulder-season rates in October and November, making this a good value window for travellers who prioritise lush scenery and birding.
December
December begins the short dry season and is a popular month due to Northern Hemisphere holiday travel. Conditions improve steadily through the month. Christmas and New Year periods are heavily booked at premium lodges; book far in advance if you plan to travel over these dates.
