Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Wildlife, Weather and Trekking

June 17, 2026 · 2 views

Rwanda sits just south of the equator, and its climate is shaped less by latitude than by altitude and the moisture-laden winds that move across Central Africa from the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. Understanding this climate, and how it plays out differently across the country's distinct ecosystems, is the key to choosing the best time to visit Rwanda for your particular priorities.

The short version: Rwanda is a year-round destination, but two drier seasons offer the most comfortable and productive conditions for most activities. The longer version requires understanding what you are planning to do -- because the best time for savannah game drives in Akagera differs from the best time for forest trekking in Nyungwe, and both differ from what matters most for general travel comfort and value.

Rwanda's Four Seasons

Rwanda experiences two wet seasons and two dry seasons within each calendar year, though the boundaries between them are increasingly blurred by climate variability.

Season Months Typical Conditions
Long dry season June to September Driest, coolest at altitude, excellent visibility
Short rains October to November Intermittent afternoon showers, landscapes green and lush
Short dry season December to February Mostly dry, warm, slightly unpredictable
Long rains March to May Heaviest rainfall, some trails difficult, prices lower

The Best Time to Visit Rwanda: A Month-by-Month View

January and February

These months fall within the short dry season and are generally good for travel across the country. Temperatures in Kigali and the eastern lowlands are warm (24-28 degrees C), while the highlands of Nyungwe and Volcanoes remain cooler and can receive surprise showers. Wildlife viewing in Akagera is good, as the vegetation from the previous rains begins to dry and thin. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is viable though the forest can still be damp underfoot.

January and February are increasingly popular months as awareness of Rwanda grows. Book accommodation and activity permits in advance.

March, April and May

The long rainy season brings heavy, often daily rainfall from around mid-afternoon, though mornings are frequently bright and clear. This is the most challenging period for outdoor activities: forest trails in Nyungwe become slippery and leech-heavy, game drive roads in Akagera can deteriorate, and general travel is less comfortable.

However, this is also the season with the most negotiating room on accommodation prices at some lodges, and the landscapes are breathtakingly lush. Birding is excellent during this period, as migratory species are present and nesting behaviour makes birds more visible and vocal. Those on a tight budget who are flexible about comfort may find genuine value here.

April is also genocide commemoration month in Rwanda, and Kwibuka -- the national remembrance period -- falls in early April. It is worth being aware of this when planning, both out of respect and because some public gatherings and events affect schedules in Kigali.

June, July and August

June to August represents the peak dry season and is broadly the best time to visit Rwanda for most travellers. Rainfall is minimal across the country, temperatures at altitude are cool and crisp (Nyungwe can drop to 10 degrees C at night), and savannah vegetation in Akagera is dry and low, making wildlife conspicuous.

Game drives in Akagera are at their most productive: predators are active, animals concentrate around water sources, and the clear air makes photography easier. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is at its most comfortable in terms of forest floor conditions, though the chimps themselves are less predictable in the dry season as they range more widely.

This is also peak season across East Africa, with higher demand placing pressure on accommodation availability and pushing prices to their seasonal highs. Booking three to six months in advance is advisable for peak season travel, and essential for any sought-after lodges.

September

September is an excellent month and arguably slightly underrated. The dry conditions continue, many lodges have slightly lower occupancy than July and August, and the light -- particularly in the late afternoons -- has a softness that photographers prize. Wildlife in Akagera remains easy to view. A very good month to visit.

October and November

The short rainy season brings welcome green to the landscape and tends to bring migratory bird arrivals, which excites birders considerably. Rain is typically intermittent rather than all-day, and mornings are often clear. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is manageable, forest trails are wetter but passable with proper gear. Some lodges offer shoulder-season rates in October and November, making this a good value window for travellers who prioritise lush scenery and birding.

December

December begins the short dry season and is a popular month due to Northern Hemisphere holiday travel. Conditions improve steadily through the month. Christmas and New Year periods are heavily booked at premium lodges; book far in advance if you plan to travel over these dates.

Best Time for Specific Activities

Akagera National Park Game Drives

Best months: June to September, December to January

The dry season concentrates wildlife at water sources, makes vegetation low and sparse for better visibility, and keeps roads in their best condition. The June to September window is ideal.

Nyungwe Chimpanzee Tracking

Best months: June to September

Forest trails are driest and most comfortable. Chimps may range more widely in dry conditions, but guide expertise mitigates this. Avoid March to May if possible -- wet, slippery conditions make the experience more demanding.

Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

Best months: Any dry period, but most atmospherically June to September when morning mist is more likely to create those extraordinary cloud-above-forest moments

Birdwatching (General)

Best months: October to December for migratory arrivals; June to September for overall ease of access; year-round in Nyungwe for endemic species

Photography

Best months: June to August for clear skies and dramatic savannah light; October to November for lush landscapes and a different palate of greens

Climate by Region

Rwanda's three main safari parks occupy quite different climate niches despite their proximity.

Park Region Altitude Typical Temperatures Rainfall Pattern
Akagera NP Eastern lowlands 1,000-1,800m 20-32 degrees C Less rainfall than rest of country
Nyungwe Forest Southwestern highlands 1,600-2,950m 10-22 degrees C Heavy; wettest park in Rwanda
Volcanoes NP Northwestern highlands 2,400-4,500m 10-18 degrees C Frequent mist and rain year-round

Packing accordingly for each zone is important. Lightweight clothes for Akagera, warm layers and waterproofs for Nyungwe and Volcanoes.

Practical Planning Considerations

  • Rwanda has no true off-season -- all parks are accessible year-round and wildlife is present throughout
  • Permit-based activities (chimpanzee tracking, golden monkey trekking) have fixed daily capacity regardless of season; always book permits well in advance
  • School holiday travel from Europe and North America drives demand in July/August and December/January; booking early is essential in these windows
  • The dry season in Rwanda corresponds roughly to the dry season in Kenya and Tanzania, so overlapping your Rwanda visit with a Tanzania or Kenya safari extension makes geographic and seasonal sense

Summary: Best Times at a Glance

  • Best overall: June to September (dry, cool, excellent wildlife)
  • Best value: October-November or January-February (shoulder seasons, quieter, some lower rates)
  • Best for birding: October to December (migratory arrivals)
  • Best for lush landscape photography: October-November or after the long rains in May
  • Most challenging: March to May (long rains; still possible but requires patience and good waterproofing)
